Robot discovers 60 million fish nests beneath Antarctic ice

An autonomous underwater robot has confirmed that one of the largest fish breeding colonies ever discovered is still thriving beneath Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf. Developed by the Alfred Wegener Institute, the vehicle known as LASSIE spent 48 continuous hours surveying the seafloor in the Weddell Sea.

Its mission verified that an estimated 60 million Jonah’s icefish nests remain active, providing scientists with new insights into one of the planet’s most extraordinary marine ecosystems.

A hidden city beneath the ice

The breeding colony lies hundreds of meters below Antarctica’s floating ice shelf, where researchers first mapped the site in 2022. Covering approximately 240 square kilometers, the nesting ground is considered the largest known fish breeding area on Earth.

The latest survey found that nest density has remained remarkably stable, suggesting the colony continues to flourish under the harsh Antarctic environment.

How LASSIE explored the seafloor

LASSIE, short for Low-Altitude Survey System for Icefish, is an autonomous underwater vehicle designed to fly just above the seabed while capturing detailed images and mapping data.

During its 48-hour mission, the robot collected high-resolution photographs and three-dimensional measurements, allowing scientists to examine nest spacing, fish behavior, and habitat conditions without disturbing the colony.

Why do these fish gather here?

The breeding site exists because slightly warmer deep water flows beneath the ice shelf, creating ideal conditions for Jonah’s icefish eggs to develop. Although the temperature difference is only about 2°C compared with surrounding waters, that small change is critical in Antarctica’s near-freezing environment.

Researchers found that the fish consistently build nests within this narrow temperature range, demonstrating how closely their reproduction depends on local ocean conditions.

Dedicated parents protect thousands of eggs

Each circular nest measures roughly 75 centimeters across and contains an average of about 1,700 eggs. Scientists observed adult male icefish guarding nearly 85% of the active nests, defending developing embryos from predators.

This level of parental care is unusual among fish and helps explain how such a vast breeding colony can remain successful year after year.

A thriving ecosystem beneath the ice

The enormous concentration of nests supports much more than just icefish. Weddell seals regularly dive to feed in the area, while sea stars, brittle stars, and other scavengers benefit from organic material produced around the colony.

Researchers believe this breeding ground forms the center of a unique Antarctic ecosystem that depends on the continued stability of the surrounding environment.
