A peaceful hike turned into a race against time when a young dog became trapped beside a rushing waterfall. The dramatic rescue, captured on camera, showed firefighters and technical rescue crews working together to save the frightened animal before it was swept away. Their careful teamwork helped bring the dog back to safety without injuries.

How the dog became trapped
The rescue happened on March 8, 2026, at the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area in Patterson, New York. A 14-month-old dog named Rudy fell about 15 feet down a steep cliff and landed on a narrow rock ledge beside Quaker Brook waterfall.
The ledge was only a short distance from the fast-moving water. Because snowmelt had raised the brook to its seasonal high, rescuers knew Rudy could easily be swept into the waterfall if he slipped.
Rescue teams rushed to help
The Patterson Fire Department responded after receiving reports of the trapped dog. Because the rescue site was nearly a mile from the nearest road and covered with snow and ice, crews used utility task vehicles to reach the area.
The Putnam County Technical Rescue Team joined the operation with specialized rope rescue equipment. Firefighters from the Putnam Lake and Brewster Fire Departments also assisted, creating a coordinated rescue effort.
A careful rope rescue
Captain Greco of the Patterson Fire Department was lowered down the steep cliff using ropes while other rescuers stood downstream in case Rudy fell into the rushing water.
After spending more than two hours stranded on the cold rock ledge, Rudy immediately jumped into Captain Greco’s arms as soon as the rescuer reached him. The rescue team then carefully lifted both of them back to the top of the cliff.
Why was the rescue so dangerous
The operation required careful planning because the rocks were wet, icy, and extremely slippery. Strong water currents increased the danger for both Rudy and the rescue team.
Every step had to be completed slowly to avoid putting the dog or rescuers at greater risk. Rope rescue specialists made sure all safety equipment was properly secured before anyone went over the cliff.
Rudy’s remarkable recovery
Once safely back on solid ground, Rudy was examined and appeared to be unharmed despite the frightening experience. Rescuers said the young dog escaped without serious injuries.
