Great Salt Lake has a reputation for being an extremely harsh place for life. Its highly salty water can be several times saltier than the ocean, yet scientists have discovered a microscopic creature thriving in its depths.
The newly documented roundworm, Diplolaimelloides woaabi, is only about a millimeter long. But its discovery is giving researchers a surprising look at the hidden biodiversity of one of North America’s most unusual lakes.
Scientists found a worm where few expected complex life

Researchers discovered Diplolaimelloides woaabi while examining sediment and algal mats from the bottom of Great Salt Lake.
The tiny nematode belongs to a group of free-living roundworms known for tolerating salty environments. Finding this particular species in Utah was especially significant because it had not previously been recorded anywhere in the United States.
The discovery suggests that the lake may support a much richer community of microscopic animals than scientists once realized.
Great Salt Lake is an extreme place to live

Great Salt Lake can be an unforgiving environment. Parts of the lake can reach salinities far above that of seawater, while conditions near the bottom can also become extremely low in oxygen.
For many animals, those conditions would make survival difficult. Yet D. woaabi appears well suited to life among the lake’s sediments and algal mats.
The worm is thought to feed on organic material and microorganisms associated with these mats. In doing so, it may play a small but important role in recycling nutrients within the lake’s largely microscopic food web.
The discovery changes what scientists knew about the lake

Great Salt Lake is already known for its brine shrimp and brine flies, which provide an important food source for millions of migratory birds.
But the discovery of a previously undocumented nematode highlights how much life may remain hidden beneath the lake’s surface.
Microscopic creatures can easily escape detection, particularly when they live inside sediment rather than in open water. By examining the lake bottom more closely, researchers are finding evidence that its ecosystem is more complicated than it first appears.
Its unusual name has a connection to Utah’s Indigenous history

The species name woaabi was chosen as a nod to Indigenous history in the Great Salt Lake region.
Researchers connected the name to a Ute word associated with the number four. The choice reflects an effort to recognize the Indigenous communities whose histories and ancestral lands are closely tied to the lake.
For such a tiny animal, the name gives the discovery a much larger connection to the place where it was found.
The tiny worm could reveal secrets about the lake’s past

Perhaps the most intriguing question is how this unusual nematode ended up in an inland salt lake in Utah.
Scientists know of closely related nematodes from very different environments, including coastal marine habitats and deep-sea settings. That raises questions about whether the species represents an ancient lineage that survived as the Great Salt Lake changed over time or whether its ancestors reached the basin through long-distance dispersal.
The answer could provide clues about the lake’s geological and ecological history.
The discovery also carries a broader lesson. Even in an ecosystem that scientists have studied for decades, life can remain hidden in places that are easy to overlook.
And at Great Salt Lake, a worm barely a millimeter long has just shown how much more there may be left to discover.
