When a rescuer arrived at an abandoned pier to help an injured seal, he expected the animal to be frightened.
He did not expect another seal to try to stop him.
The initial report
Naude received a report about an injured seal at the tip of the old pier at Pelican Point. The structure had been out of use for years and was badly rusted and damaged, making the rescue even more challenging.
When the team reached the area, they found a young seal resting on the pier with a rubber ring tightly wrapped around its neck. The ring had cut deeply into the animal’s skin and needed to be removed as soon as possible.
But there was a problem.
Another seal was nearby.
The rescue took patience
The injured seal was in a difficult position, and the rescuers could not simply rush in and grab it.
They waited for the right opportunity to approach without causing the animal to panic. After carefully watching its movements, Naude eventually moved close enough to attempt the rescue.
That’s when the seal’s unexpected companion sprang into action.
A tiny protector came charging in
The second seal appeared to interpret the rescue attempt as an attack.
Instead of swimming away, it moved toward Naude and tried to intervene.
The little seal was apparently determined to protect its injured companion, even if that meant confronting a much larger human.
At one point, it charged toward the rescuer’s leg, coming close enough to take a bite.
For Naude, it was an unexpected complication.
For the seal, however, the message seemed clear: stay away from my friend.
Finally, the rubber ring came off
Despite the interruption, the rescuers eventually managed to safely approach the injured seal.
They removed the rubber ring that had been cutting into its neck, freeing the animal from the painful restraint.
An unforgettable impression
What began as a routine rescue had turned into something much more memorable.
The injured seal was finally free, but its companion had already left the rescuers with an unforgettable impression.
The little seal had not understood that the humans were there to help.
It simply saw its friend in trouble and tried to protect it.
