Great white shark breaks expected migration pattern off South Carolina

Great white sharks usually follow seasonal routes along the Atlantic coast, but one shark has taken a less expected path. Breton, a large great white shark, spent longer than expected near the Southeast before moving north along the Atlantic coast. OCEARCH tracking data showed Breton about 70 miles off South Carolina on August 10, 2026, after spending time farther south while other tracked sharks had already moved north. His movements are giving scientists another look at how flexible great white shark migration can be.

Here is what researchers know about Breton, his unusual route, and why these movements matter.

Breton took a slower route north

Breton is an adult male great white shark that was tagged off Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia, in September 2020. At the time of tagging, he measured about 13 feet long and weighed more than 1,400 pounds.

After years of tracking, Breton has traveled along much of the Atlantic coast and into Atlantic Canada. In 2026, his movements stood out because he stayed farther south for a time while other tracked white sharks had already begun moving north.

His South Carolina location was notable

On August 10, Breton’s latest satellite signal placed him about 70 miles off South Island, South Carolina. OCEARCH said this made him the southernmost white shark it was tracking in the western North Atlantic at that time.

The location did not mean Breton was completely outside the normal range for great white sharks. South Carolina is part of the known winter and spring range of western North Atlantic white sharks, but his later northward movement came after other sharks had already started their seasonal trip.

Research shows that many white sharks in the western North Atlantic make regular seasonal movements. They often spend summer and fall in waters off New England and Atlantic Canada before traveling south toward warmer waters.

South Carolina is part of this southern range. Sharks can travel thousands of miles during these migrations, so their exact locations can change greatly from one month to another.

Why sharks may change their timing

Scientists do not have one simple answer for why Breton’s movements differed from those of other tracked sharks. Water temperature, food supplies, age, sex and other conditions can all affect where sharks travel.

The Southeast is also an important area for white shark research. OCEARCH has noted that adult males and females come together in the Carolinas during winter and spring, raising questions about whether the region may play a role in reproduction.

Tracking reveals hidden movements

Breton’s location comes from a satellite tag attached to his dorsal fin. When the shark reaches the surface, the tag can send a signal that helps researchers estimate where the animal is.

These signals do not mean scientists are watching the shark every second. A shark can spend long periods underwater without sending a usable location. Even so, repeated signals over time can reveal large travel routes that would otherwise be difficult to see.

What Breton’s journey means

Breton’s route shows that great white migration is not always exactly the same for every shark. A broad seasonal pattern may exist, while individual animals still choose different paths and travel at different times.

That information is useful for science and conservation. Understanding where great whites travel can help researchers learn about feeding, reproduction and ocean conditions while improving knowledge about how these important predators use the Atlantic.
