The common snook is one of Belize’s most overlooked saltwater fishing targets. Found from Florida to Brazil, these powerful fish thrive in mangroves, rivers, lagoons and estuaries.
Snook can grow to impressive sizes, with adults reaching up to 50 inches. In Belize, they are found throughout mangrove islands, shallow lagoons and coastal rivers where freshwater meets the sea.
River snook fishing

For anglers chasing trophy-sized fish, Belize’s coastal rivers are among the best places to look. Snook often gather around estuaries, where tides and currents bring baitfish within easy reach.
Because snook can tolerate saltwater, brackish water and freshwater, they can also travel well upriver. A 10-weight fly rod paired with a sinking line is a strong choice for reaching fish in deeper holes. Large baitfish patterns, such as EP Minnows, can be effective.
Mangrove snook fishing

Mangrove islands and shallow lagoons offer a different kind of snook experience. These areas provide plenty of cover, and snook often use tangled mangrove roots as ambush points while waiting for prey.
Sight fishing can be especially exciting, but accuracy matters. Anglers may need to place a fly just inches from the shoreline. An 8-weight rod with a floating line works well, while a 9-weight can provide extra power around heavy cover.
The best flies and gear

The right setup depends on where you plan to fish. River anglers targeting larger snook can benefit from a 10-weight rod and sinking fly line, while mangrove fishing generally calls for an 8- or 9-weight rod and floating line.
Baitfish patterns are among the most useful flies. EP Minnows, Clousers and Deceivers can imitate the small fish that snook regularly hunt.
An overlooked opportunity in Belize

Belize is famous for its bonefish, permit and tarpon, but snook offer another exciting fishery for fly anglers willing to explore beyond the flats.
Whether fishing a coastal river or working the edges of a mangrove lagoon, anglers can encounter aggressive snook capable of putting serious pressure on their tackle. For anyone visiting Belize with a fly rod, this overlooked fishery may be well worth adding to the trip.
Why snook deserve more attention

Snook may not have the same reputation as Belize’s famous bonefish, permit and tarpon, but they offer plenty of excitement for fly anglers. Their willingness to strike streamers and their powerful runs make them a rewarding target, whether you are fishing independently or with a guide.
