Florida wildlife biologists have achieved their most successful Burmese python removal season since launching a long-term research program more than a decade ago. Instead of relying solely on traditional searches, scientists used an innovative tracking method involving radio-tagged male “scout” pythons to locate breeding females hidden deep within the Everglades.
The approach resulted in a record number of captures while preventing thousands of future hatchlings from entering one of North America’s most important wetlands.
A record-breaking breeding season

Between November 2025 and April 2026, researchers removed 177 Burmese pythons weighing a combined 8,080 pounds from approximately 200 square miles of habitat in Collier County, Florida.
This represents the largest total biomass removed during a single breeding season since the Conservancy’s python research program began in 2013.
How “scout” pythons find hidden snakes

Rather than searching randomly through dense wetlands, wildlife biologists fit selected male pythons with radio transmitters before releasing them back into the wild. During the breeding season, these males naturally seek out reproductive females.
Researchers simply follow the radio signals to locate breeding groups that would otherwise be extremely difficult to find.
Why female pythons are the highest priority

Large breeding females are considered the most important targets because a single Burmese python can lay dozens of eggs in one nesting season. Removing one reproductive female can prevent an entire generation of invasive snakes from entering the ecosystem.
This season alone, researchers also removed approximately 4,100 python eggs before they could hatch.
Why Burmese pythons threaten the Everglades

Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons have become one of Florida’s most destructive invasive predators. They consume mammals, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife, contributing to major declines in several native animal populations across the Everglades.
Scientists believe the invasion began after pet snakes escaped or were intentionally released into the wild.
Smarter conservation through science

The success of the scout-python program shows how wildlife research can improve invasive species management. By understanding Python’s behavior rather than relying solely on chance encounters, scientists can focus their efforts where they have the greatest impact.
Although completely eliminating Burmese pythons from Florida is considered unlikely, reducing breeding success helps slow population growth and protects native wildlife.

Biologists will continue using radio-tagged scout pythons while refining tracking techniques and expanding long-term monitoring. Every breeding season provides new insights into python movements, reproduction, and habitat use, enabling future removal efforts to be even more effective.
